If a child or adult is at immediate risk of significant harm, in the first instance you should always contact your local social services team or local police (call 101). You must then inform your Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser - listed below. However, if you are unsure about the level of your concern, please contact your Safeguarding Adviser for advice as soon as possible.

Safer Recruitment Practice Guidance

Please be aware that a 2016 version of the Practice Guidance Safer Recruitment has been published which updates guidance to parishes on all matters relating to safer recruitment. This has been uploaded onto the diocesan website safeguarding page under national policy along with a range of relevant forms to help you with safer recruitment. Please note that this process should be followed for all new recruits as from the date of acceptance by your PCC.

May we take this opportunity to remind parishes that DBS checks are not necessary for anyone who is a church musician or chorister. However, if this person moves towards a greater involvement with children and young people, i.e. teaching or acting as a musical director, then a check will be required.

Summer Holiday Cover

The diocesan safeguarding team have put in place arrangements to ensure that there is access to safeguarding help and advice during the summer holiday period. Regardless of your episcopal area you should contact the DSA listed as 'on duty' below. If you cannot contact one of the DSAs and urgently need to discuss a safeguarding matter then please contact an archdeacon.

Policy

At Diocesan Synod in March, there was unanimous support for the motion “That this Synod reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding all God’s people; adopts the Policy Safeguarding All God’s People in respect of its areas of responsibility; and strongly commends the Policy to parishes for their adoption and implementation”.

The Safeguarding team wrote to parishes in March with guidance about the new Safeguarding Policy Statement. Copies of all of the documents sent to parishes are available in the News section of the Safeguarding page.

The Safeguarding team are currently reviewing and updating the website to ensure that all the material is up to date and relevant to parish work. If you are unable to find something that you require during this period of revision please contact your Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser.  

The 'Children in Church' poster has been updated (June 2016) and is available in the Diocesan Policy & Guidance section of the website. We suggest that parishes display this poster along with the new Safeguarding Policy Statement.

What we do

As Safeguarding Advisers, Jenny, Jenny and Narinder

·         Ensure effective safeguarding arrangements are in place across the diocese

·         Act as a point of contact to assist with safeguarding concerns, including those where someone may appear to pose a risk to a church community

·         Offer practical advice on policies, procedures and practice guidance.

·         Deliver safeguarding training in line with the national programme.

·         Advise on safe recruitment and DBS issues where there are blemished disclosures.
