What we do
Each year Christians from across Yorkshire design and steward a display on a Christian theme for the Great Yorkshire Show.
The team aim to make the display accessible, inter-active and for all ages, giving plenty of opportunity for volunteer stewards to reflect on the theme too. In recent years the Yorkshire Church on Show display has attracted over 4,500 visitors over the three days of the show. For some, visiting the display has become an annual priority.
Who we are
People from Christian Churches across Yorkshire work together to make and steward the display. The Great Yorkshire Show is held every July in Harrogate. The Yorkshire Agricultural Society kindly allows the Church On Show exclusive use of a former cricket pavilion on the showground to mount their inter-active display.
2017 - Seeing Signs of Hope
Last year’s Yorkshire Church on Show ran from Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 July and had as its theme ‘Seeing Signs of Hope’. Seeing signs of hope in the everyday whether in town or country, city or village – or even in traffic lights!
Visitors to the Church Pavillion helped build (arguably) the largest flower arrangement in the show - or at least the largest flower arrangement made of green biodegradable drinking straws and paper petals.
Inside the pavilion people travelled through an ‘urban’ end of the building and were invited to build a LEGO urban scape in the midst of town and city ‘signs of hope’. The ‘rural’ end of the building was a celebration of the countryside and a chance to mould plasticine animals and plants for the country-scape.
There was an invitation to decorate a transparent tile to place on a ‘light table’ as a ‘thank you’ and celebration of somewhere, someone or sometime which was a ‘hope, blessing or encouragement'. Also opportunities to pray, to talk, to sit, to think, to relax and watch the world go by for a few moments.
So... something for everyone. If Lego and plasticine seem like too much fun, consider them construction or artwork. Either way let them reveal signs of joy and hope, the presence of God breaking through and a chance to join in with friends old or new.
What makes it Work?
The success of our approach has been carefully developed over the years as we have listened to what our visitors say. A short paper explains our thinking.
